Karachi The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) said on Thursday that it demolished 35 illegal water hydrants and also disconnected 95 illegal connections ranging from three to eight inch dia during its drive against water mafia in Baldia Town on Thursday.

However, it said that a number of illegal hydrants were still operating in Baldia Town and its surrounding localities for which the KWSB would be launching second phase of the operation from Monday on the recommendation of the area people and the elected representatives.

The KWSB had information about 25 illegal water hydrants in Baldia Town and its adjoining areas which were razed during an operation on Tuesday last. However, when the water utility came to know about other illegal water hydrants they extended the drive when the remaining 10 hydrants were also flattened by the police and KWSB staff.

According to KWSB, these illegal hydrants were stealing water from 33-inch main pipeline. These water hydrants were identified by former town nazim and newly elected MPA Kamran Akhtar who was also present during the operation along with Managing Director KWSB Misbahuddin Farid and other concerned staff.

Owing to these illegal hydrants, the area residents were facing serious water shortage.

The operation against water mafia was launched with the consultation of the area MNA and MPA to provide normal water supply to the area residents. During the demolition operation, the KWSB teams also seized the machinery and other equipment used by these hydrants.

The chief engineers concerned will launch FIRs against the operators of these illegal water hydrants. MD KWSB Misbahuddin Farid thanked Kamran Akhtar MPA for pointing out illegal hydrants and helping the water utility in its drive against water mafia.
