690 rail coaches rehabilitated

ISLAMABAD - Carriage Factory Islamabad has rehabilitated 690 old coaches during the last three years that would be durable for another 20 years. The factory, established with the cooperation of German government, is capable to manufacture 150 German-designed coaches each year.

“The Carriage Factory rehabilitated 20 coaches of meter gauge for Senegal Railway and also manufactured new six slipper coaches for Pakistan Army,” an official told APP here on Tuesday.

He said out of 400 dysfunctional coaches, 275 have been rehabilitated and work on the rest was in progress, adding the restoration of these coaches would help Pakistan Railways to achieve progress.

The official said that Pakistan Railways will also receive 202 new coaches against a cost of around Rs16 billion to improve its operations and facilitate the passengers.

Out of the 202 coaches of various types, Pakistan Railways has received 65 coaches in Completely Built Unit condition those are being utilized with different trains plying across the country.

He said the new coaches have the capacity to run at the speed of 160 km per hour but due to the dilapidated rail track it would run at 120 km.
