Karachi: Commissioner Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Matanat Ali Khan on Wednesday constituted a committee, comprising senior municipal officials, to visit the City Abattoir in Cattle Colony, Landhi, and monitor the slaughtering of animals and further processing of meat items. The committee consists of Senior Director Enterprise and Investment Promotion, Senior Director Veterinary Services, Legal Adviser, Director Finance and Administration, Director Internal Audit and other senior officials of the KMC.

Presiding over a meeting of senior officials of the Veterinary and Enterprise and Investment Promotion Department, Matanat Ali said that the City Abattoir had been handed over to a private firm on lease basis under the public-private partnership programme.

He said that the lease agreement binds the private firm to use the pre-installed machinery at the abattoir for processing the large parts of meat in order to preserve their freshness for human consumption from health and hygiene point of view.

The committee would look into the complaints, if any, against the private firm if it did not fully observe various clauses of the agreement that it had signed with the KMC in 2007.

The meeting also took into consideration the matter of paying electricity bills of the abattoir on time as well as ensuring provision of service vehicles by the KMC.

The committee would compile a comprehensive report regarding the financial, technical and administrative affairs of the abattoir as well as suggesting reviewing the clauses of the agreement, if required.
