KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to disburse Rs500 million special grant-in-aid provided by the Sindh government among all the five district municipal corporations (DMCs) within one week so that the workers could be paid before Eid.

Headed by Justice Ghulam Sarwar Korai, the bench also directed the DMCs to pay salaries and pension to more than 50,000 serving and retired employees within the next 10 days. The order came during hearing of two identical petitions regarding unpaid salaries and pension to thousands of KMC employees.

Provincial deputy finance secretary Shakeel Ahmed informed the court that grant money for the months of May and June has been released to the corporation on July 16, adding that KMC was self reliant and can generate money to pay its employees.

Behzad Haider, counsel for KMC, disputed Ahmedís claim and said that they have received grant only for the month of May while that of June is yet to be paid.

The judges took serious notice of non-compliance of their order in which they had directed the government to ensure the grant is released by the 10th of every month. The bench told Ahmed to show documents to prove his claims.
