Karachi†CNG (compressed natural gas) stations across Sindh will remain closed from 8:00 am on Tuesday (today) to 8:00 am on Thursday, said a spokesman for the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Monday.

He said CNG stations found to be operating during the shutdown period would be subjected to disconnection of gas supply for another 24 hours.

SSGC made the announcement to restore stability of its gas distribution system that has been affected because of the increasing demand of the commodity in winter.

However, the gas utilityís decision has come at a time when people in various residential areas of Karachi are already enduring shortage of natural gas for domestic use.

The SSGC spokesman said domestic consumers in a number of areas of the metropolitan continue to endure low gas pressure mostly because of increased demand in winter.

Residents of Lines Area, PECHS Block-2, parts of Defence Housing Authority, Clifton, Malir, and their adjoining areas complain about low or no gas pressure for household consumption for a major part of the day.

The spokesman said necessary technical work for improving SSGCís distribution network serving the residents of Lines Area could not be carried out before Monday because of delays in getting permission and some financial issues that need to be sorted out with the town municipal administration concerned.

He said the overall demand of natural gas was around 1,350 mmcfd (millions of cubic feet per day) with maximum availability of up to 1,150 mmcfd in the SSGC system.

The gas utility had to resort to suspending supply to industries and the CNG sector to manage the shortfall of around 200 mmcfd, he added.

Prime Ministerís Adviser on Petroleum & Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain and SSGC Managing Director Zuhair Siddiqui had called an emergency press conference at the gas utilityís head office on January 5 to assure the media that gas supply issues of Lines Area and other hard-hit residential areas would be resolved by the coming Monday after taking due technical and gas shutdown measures.
