Full attention being given to anti polio measures Qaim

Karachi—The Special Envoy of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Hussain A. Gezairy, here on Thursday called on Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, at the C.M. House.
At the meeting they discussed matters regarding Polio Eradication Programme in the province. The Chief Minister Sindh said that programme against Polio is very important and full attention is being given towards anti-polio measures in the province.

He said that it is matter of concern that this year also three cases of polio have been detected.

Syed Qaim Ali Shah maintained that the provincial government has now changed the system as previously District Coordination Officers (DCOs) were supervising the campaign but they did not took required interest, and now the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) have been made responsible to look after and manage prompt measures for control of Polio in their respective districts.

Chief Minister Sindh further said that Deputy Commissioners and his staff along with Health Department officials are fully engaged to face and combat the situation in their districts upto Union Council Level. He further stated that the overall coverage of polio is 95% and emphasis is being made to further concentrate on converge of remaining areas.

Chief Minister Sindh further said that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani are regularly holding meetings in this regard while Sindh Government holds regular monthly meetings and taking care of the programme.

Sindh Health Secretary, Hashim Raza Zaidi, informed the Special Envoy about measures being adopted by Government of Sindh to eradicate the Polio disease from the province.

He added that Chief Minister Sindh regularly convenes meetings to review the progress.

Zaidi further stated that all responsible persons and staff have created spirit of ownership for the project.

He said that Deputy Commissioners are closely maintaining liaison with MNAs, MPAs and other agencies for fulfillment and success of commitment so that there is 100% coverage of children. Special Envoy of the WHO, Dr. Hussain A. Gezairy, stressed the need to further accelerate the momentum for achieving the goal against Polio disease.

He stressed that inter-provincial borders and desert areas be properly looked after so that no child should be left un attended.

Gezairy said that provincial Health Department and administration at districts are working hard with proper selection of teams. He stressed that there should be accountability and vaccination campaign must be ensured.

He further said that virus of polio be finished and province be made zero virus.

Secretary Health informed that the Sindh Government has made tremendous efforts to improve the Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI) and other coverages under Primary Health Care so as to get completely rid of the Polio from the province.

He assured that every child on its birth has been ensured to be vaccinated.

Hashim Raza Zaidi further assured that campaign has been launched to spread awareness among masses.

Special Envoy added that it is essential to maintain quality of medicines and drive against Polio so as to completely get the target achieved. The meeting was also attended by Special Secretary to C.M. Hafeezullah Abbasi, Special Secretary Health and others.
