Gas supply of six ministers cut off as PWD fails to pay bills

ISLAMABAD: In a radical departure from the past practices, Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) has cut off the gas supply of six ministers for non-payment of bills by Pakistan Works Department (PWD). Security staff of other 16 defaulter-ministers, however, resisted this move pushing back the gas officials. The ministers owe SNGPL outstanding dues to the tune of Rs5,974, 589.

As many as 22 ministers have been declared SNGPLís defaulters thanks to PWD whereas those facing suspension of supply included five ministers as well as Deputy Chairman Senate Sabir Baloch, confirmed the SNGPL officials in Islamabad. National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza, Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Mian Manzoor Watto and Rehman Malik have also been turned into defaulters of SNGPL by PWD.

The SNGPL sources say that more disconnections will take place today (Thursday) as the payment of outstanding dues have not been made by Pakistan Works Department (PWD).Among those ministers who faced disconnection Tuesday included Moula Bux Chandio, Makhdoom Shahab-ud-Din, Waqas Akram Sheikh and Umer Gul Gorchani etc.

Although the SNGPL staff went to suspend the gas supply to the residence of Interior Minister Rehman Malik, his security personnel didnít let them enter into the premises, according to the officials privy to details. Malikís payable dues stand at Rs403, 365. Syed Naveed Qamarís connection has been restored after he partly paid the outstanding dues on Wednesday.

Mula Bux Chandio has an outstanding gas bill of Rs494,354, Sheikh Waqas Akram Rs527, 393, Umer Gul Gorchani Rs688, 237, Makhdoom Shahab-ud-Din Rs501, 759 and Faqeer Jadave Mangri Rs661, 136. Naveed Qamar who previously served as minister of petroleum and natural resources has had payable dues of Rs237, 209. He has not faced disconnection after he partly paid the bill.

Makhdoom Shahabís supply was disconnected earlier as well but he managed its restoration without paying the dues resulting in disconnection again. Likewise, Sabir Baloch has faced the suspension of gas supply for the 2nd time.

Two ministers: Rana Farooq Saeed and Tariq Anis, have avoided the embarrassment as their outstanding dues were paid.Other ministers and their outstanding gas dues are as follows: Mian Manzoor Wattoo (Rs178, 259), Sardar Bahadar (Rs821, 072), Rehman Malik (Rs403, 365), Faisal Karim Kundi (Rs147, 556), Fehmida Mirza (Rs132, 716), Hina Rabbani Khar (Rs32, 636), Firdaus Ashiq Awan (Rs27, 668), Samina Khalid Ghurki (Rs21, 768), Samsam Bokhari (Rs14, 757), Mir Hazar Khan Bajarani (Rs77, 913), Pal Bhatti (Rs29,120), and Muzafar-ul-Malik (Rs11,992).

Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza that has an outstanding amount of Rs381,266 against her residence and an amount of Rs369,794 has been outstanding against the residence of Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi.
