KARACHI : The Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) has urged the government to activate the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) and appoint its chief.

Jawaid Akhai, Chairman, PPMA, in a statement said that the pharmaceutical industry is facing hardships, which was resulting in shortage of medicine because of corruption and inefficiency at the DRAP.

He said registration board, licencing board, or pricing committee did not meet even once in the last six months.

Due to this, 16,000 products are stuck with DRAP, he added.

He said that many local pharmaceutical giants are evaluating options to move their businesses to countries which offer better deals to manufacturers.

“Instead of facilitating local companies, DRAP is acting against investors in the pharmaceutical sector,” he asserted.

Jawed said the regulatory authority recently imposed extra charges on drug exporters whereas it hiked various fees 20 to 50 folds in some cases.
