Karachi  The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has announced eight hours of power cuts in the industrial areas of the city from Saturday (today) in view of the reduction of gas supply from the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC).

According to the spokesman for the KESC on Friday, eight hours of power load shedding would be carried out in the industrial zones of the city as a compulsion as the SSGC reduced the gas supply volume for its power plants to 120 MMCFD on the pretext of unpaid amount of interest on the gas dues payable by the KESC.

The KESC spokesman said that the duration of load shedding in the residential and commercial areas of the city would remain unchanged and would not be increased despite reduction in the gas supply volume.

He said the privatised power utility during one year had paid Rs35 billion to the SSGC while it purchased natural gas worth Rs34 billion. He said the KESC had offered an accord to the SSGC several times for payments of its remaining gas dues in two year’s time but the management and board of directors of the gas utility rejected it.
