KARACHI: President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Haroon Agar has expressed concern over the announcement of eight-hour power-cuts in all industrial zones in the city due to drastic reductions in gas supply.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the chamber said that the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) had announced the power cut in response to the reduction in gas supply by Sui-Southern Gas Company (SSGC).

Agar said that power outages in two spells of four-hours each daily have crippled industrial activities in all seven industrial zones.

“Industries, which are already facing several hardships owing to gas outages and low gas pressure, multiplicity of taxes and high operational costs, cannot afford power outages causing hefty financial losses and further increase in the operational costs,” he said.

Export-oriented industries have been hit hard by this disruption in power supply. It has prevented them from meeting export orders in a timely manner and has raised the cost of production.

Agar has requested the caretaker prime minister to intervene in this matter and ensure the provision of a regular power supply to all the industrial zones of Karachi by the KESC.
