Ministry asked to ensure gas supply to CNG pumps on 11th

In a bid to provide one-day relief to the consumers of CNG on upcoming elections day (Saturday), the caretaker government has now given directions to the petroleum ministry to ensure uninterrupted supply of natural gas to the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling stations.

Sources in the ministry of petroleum & natural resources told this scribe that following the directions of caretaker Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khoso, the ministry of petroleum and natural resources has finally issued instructions to the state owned gas utilities-SNGPL & SSGCL to ensure continuous supply of natural gas to the filling stations located in various parts of the country on the day of general elections.

“Yes, the CNG filling stations will remain open to ensure continuous cheap fuel supply on the historic occasion (May 11) to the CNG consumers already bearing heavy brunt of 18 days a month gas loadshedding across the country for a long time, “said a senior official at petroleum ministry.

However, senior leader of All Pakistan CNG Association Ghiayas Abdullah Paracha, when contacted, deplored over the government decision to provide natural gas to the CNG filling stations on a single day of general elections in the country. He said the CNG outlets remained closed for 18 days a month, partially works for 12 days, but the government was not paying attention to the association’s recommendations to resolve long pending woes of once-robust CNG industry. He also said the government has not informed them about the provision of CNG on elections day (May 11) as so far they have not received any official intimation or any schedule featuring plan for provision of gas besides the announcement made by Information Minister during a press conference held the other day.

It is worthwhile to mention that a cell established by the interim government would start its operation from today (May 7) and would remain open for 24 hours a day. This oil and gas cell would ensure co-ordination among Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Finance, Water and Power, Sui Northern Gas PipeLines, Sui Southern Gas Company Limited, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited and Pakistan State Oil to provide continuous supply of oil and gas. Members of this cell include Additional Secretary Petroleum (Focal Point), Director General Oil, Director General Gas, General Manager PSO, General Manager SNGPL and Chief Manager SSGCL.

Meanwhile, caretaker federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Sohail Wajahat H. Siddiqui Monday visited the ‘Oil and Gas Control Cell’ established in the premises of the ministry.

While visiting the Oil and Gas Control Cell, Sohail Wajahat H Siddiqui said that he had a detailed discussion with the Minister for Water & Power Dr. Musadik Malik and Minister for IT & Telecom Dr. Sania Nishtar regarding this control cell and both the above ministries will be providing full support for the continuous supply of electricity and gas and to keep the telecommunication and mobile network operational during the elections 2013.

He said that all the relevant Ministries and departments will coordinate to ensure the availability oil and gas for the power sector and to keep the petrol pumps, CNG stations and telephone and mobile phone networks operational during the election days.

so that smooth electoral process can be ensured. Oil and Gas Control Cell will be operational round-the-clock and all information regarding oil and gas stocks and supplies will be available in the control cell. The minister directed the officials concerned to ensure the co-ordination at all levels among various ministries and departments to make the Control Cell a success.
