National ST&I Policy 2012 launched

Islamabad: The recently approved National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy 2012 was launched here on Friday at a ceremony organised by Pakistan Council for Science and Technology in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology at a local hotel.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Mir Changez Khan Jamali was the chief guest on the occasion.

The well attended event attracted people from all walks of life. The august gathering was graced by a number of dignitaries including the federal and state ministers, parliamentarians, federal and provincial secretaries, heads of research and development organisations, VCs of universities, eminent scientists, representatives of foreign missions, international donors, representatives of private sector and industry, chamber of commerce and others.

The chief guest showed satisfaction on the launch of the new ST&I policy. He lauded the efforts of PCST and MoST in this regard and showed high hopes for effective implementation of the policy. He highlighted that the new demand-driven and people centric ST&I policy reflects a milestone for development strategy of self-reliance and focuses on improving the quality of the common people by creating an industrial and economic environment. He stressed that the development of a country is strongly dependent on its S&T capacity and welcomed the fact that the highest premium is placed on the quality of human resources in the new ST&I policy.

Speaking on the occasion the federal secretary for science & technology said that the main objective of the ceremony was to create consciousness about the National ST&I Policy among various stake holders. He highlighted principal aims and objectives of the policy under the broader areas of socio-economic development, human resource development, R&D infrastructure, promotion of ST&I in the society and S&T management system. The new policy envisages a paradigm shift, in which innovation is recognised as an integral part of S&T system, he added.

PCST Chairperson Prof. Dr. Mudassir Asrar stated that the ceremony was an inspiring initiative of Pakistan Council for Science and Technology in strengthening scientific and technological co-operation among the stakeholders.
