ISLAMABAD: Berend De Groot head of Cooperation EU delegation to Pakistan has congratulated National Physical and Standards Laboratory (NPSL) on getting accreditation for its labs in association with key partners such as EU funded TRTA II programme, which is implemented by United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). Pakistan can potentially brand itself in the global markets by achieving such hallmarks for removal of Technical Barrier to Trade (TBTs) as demonstrated by NPSL, he added.

NPSL achieved the Accreditation Certificate award by Pakistan National Accreditation Council (PNAC). The certificate was presented to NPSL on the World Metrology Day celebrations on May 20, 2013. NPSL received this certificate for its on-site calibration services for thermal and mass metrology and by virtue of this NPSL is now able to provide internationally traceable calibration services to the satisfaction of its customers in conformance with the applicable requirements of ISO/IEC 17025-2005.

Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar Secretary Ministry of Science and Technology said Metrology provides the road map for achieving quality by ensuring the measurement devices and instruments used are continuously calibrated to assure their accuracy, traceability and conformity to international standards. He said accurate measurements have the potential to help address challenges such as global climate change, provide sustainable sources of clean water, food and energy and maintain a wholesome environment for the well-being of all people.

Bruno Valanzuolo Chief Technical adviser TRTA II programme highlighted the assistance provided by the programme to quality infrastructure institutes to bring their services at par with the international standards.

NPSL should follow a business plan for commercialisation of its calibration services for its sustainability and further strengthening of traceable measurement services for the industry.

During the technical sessions six metrology related papers were presented i.e Measurements in daily life, Vacuum Standardisation, Metrology for technical up-gradation, Metrology and Accreditation support to Trade, Metrology in Chemistry, Technical interventions to enhance exports.

Dr Shaukat Parvez Chairman PCSIR appreciated the NPSL and said it was a mono functional service provider with a mandate of highly specific objectives and quality functions to carry out measurements traceable at an international level in conjunction with other National Metrology Institutes of the world.

NPSL also provides advisory, consultancy and training services regarding awareness among traders, exporters, product users, consumers, manufacturers and producers.

Shaheen Raja Director General NPSL said this was the first time Pakistan was celebrating World Metrology Day. Metrology is a bridge, which connects the science and technology with the commerce and economy.

He said sound metrological base developed by several nations has boosted the trade and exports of these nations and these have grown manifold and Pakistan needs to follow similar pursuits.
