Over 150 linemen die every year

LAHORE :BECAUSE of improper safety measures, more than 150 linemen and grid staff of the WAPDA die and as many as mentioned above become permanently disabled every year, observed speakers at a conference on Safety Day.

The conference was organised by the All Pakistan WAPDA Hydro Electric Workers Union at the Bakhtiar Labour Hall on Thursday.

The speakers urged the PEPCO Management to take emergent measures to ensure safe and healthy conditions at workplaces. They said deaths and permanent disability of staff including linemen and grid staff are increasing every year due to fatal and non-fatal accidents every year. It requires effective measures for provisions of standardised safety equipments and observation of safety regulations both by the management and field staff as well as their comprehensive adequate professional training and developing preventive safer culture at workplaces, they maintained.

Speaking on this occasion, Arshad Rafique, Chief Executive Officer LESCO, urged the workers to get fully observed the safety regulations at workplaces and refuse to work if electricity shuts down on 11 K.V line is not arranged.

Trade union leader Khurshid Ahmed said that unsafe working conditions and absence of safety regulations cause tragic accidents which result in deaths and disability of field staff. He demanded that the PEPCO and provincial government should ensure safe working conditions for the workers by getting observed safety laws at workplaces strictly.

The conference was also addressed by Rana Shakoor, Ch. Maqsood Ahmed, Osama Tariq, Zakir Ali Shah, Naveed Dogar, Rana Ikram and other representatives of the union.
