Pakistan, India need to increase mango trade

LAHORE: India and Pakistan should set aside their differences and present a united front when it comes to marketing mangoes abroad as both the countries can benefit from a coordinated export approach since, combined, their two seasons span over eight to nine months in a year, said Harvest Tradings CEO Ahmad Jawad while talking to Daily Times on Tuesday.

The potential gains from increased economic integration between India and Pakistan are large, he said. Indiaís mango season lasts from March to June, while Pakistanís begins in June and ends in October. More should be done to boost the trade of fruit between the two countries.

Similarly India and Pakistan must resolve their political disputes through dialogue or any other means but should immediately move forward for ensuring better life to their masses who had so far only witnessed poverty and illiteracy and non-existence of medical and health facilities and trade is the only way to close both sidesí people in different sectors.

Under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreements, the most favoured nation principle is supposed to ensure that WTO members donít discriminate against one another, allowing all countries in the organisation to benefit equally from the lowest possible tariffs. Currently the trading volume between the two countries is presently around $2.5 billion, it may increase to cross $10 billion in next three to four years, by comparison, two-way trade between India and China is valued at more than $60 billion annually. staff report
