Pesco line losses cross all limits

ISLAMABAD - Line losses of Peshawar Electric Supply Company that were earlier around 38 per cent and stood highest among all other distribution companies have crossed all limits by reaching 45 per cent. It was informed to a Parliamentary Committee that due to non-cooperation of law enforcement agencies, losses were going beyond limit in Pesco. It is worth mentioning here that Pesco for a long time have been taking plea of law and order situation in the province behind increasing line losses.

Senator Zahid Khan chaired the meeting of standing committee on water and power. It was told to the standing committee that most of the share in line losses was of power theft that at some stations had crossed 85 per cent.

Pesco CEO put the blame on law enforcement agencies for increasing line losses and power theft in the region. It is also pertinent to mention here that situation was not that worse even before Swat Operation.

Special Secretary Himayatullah told the committee that influential people were also creating hurdles in the way of power company employees and they at some certain times made the employees hostages.

During the meeting, Chairman Wapda Syed Raghib Hussain informed the committee that tender for Kurram Tangi dam would be awarded in December this year. He said that law enforcement agencies and Chief Secretary have provided security assistance over the Dam and work is continued smoothly.

He said that total cost of the project is Rs 59 billion while USAID would provide Rs 100 billion for the project. He said that negotiations are continued with World Bank to engage it for other expenses of the project.

Chairman Wapda told the committee that World Bank would provide Rs 500 million for Dasu power project and negotiations are continuing with donors over Kurram Tangi, Dasu and Bhasha dams. He said that Tarbela-IV extension project would be completed till March 2013.

Senator Nisar said that these entire things are on papers and nothing on the practical grounds. He said that from last several years officials are repeating same things and there is nothing new.
