KARACHI: Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has said that it would not have the funds to procure furnace oil from Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and power from independent power producers (IPPs) after May 2013.

In a letter dispatched to the ministry of water and power, the KESC warned that power outages could be increased up to 14 hours per day in Karachi if the federal and provincial government would not release payments.

According to the sources, the KESC has requested the federal government to release at least Rs 25 billion directly to PSO to help ensure regular supply of furnace oil to the company.

It also urged Sindh government to immediate release the first installment of its Rs 22 billion dues owed to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KESC), the sources added.
