Karachi: The Sindh High Court on Wednesday directed provincial authorities to file a report after fair valuation of the property of all the people whose land is required for the Lyari Expressway project. A division bench headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar maintained status quo in the case and restricted the authorities concerned from displacing the petitioners until further orders. The court adjourned the hearing to May 5.

Represented by Advocate Shaukat Ali Shaikh, the petitioners (32 residents of Liaquatabad) said the respondents were trying to demolish their houses, even though they had registered their lease deeds.

They said the respondents had not paid them the compensation amount in accordance with the SHC’s directives.

The petitioners requested the court to direct the respondents to pay them adequate compensation according to the market value of their property or consider Section 23 of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894.

Earlier, the court had restrained the LEW project authorities and other respondents from demolishing the houses of the petitioners without paying them compensation.

During the proceedings on Wednesday, Land Acquisition Officer Altaf Hussain requested the court to allow demolition of the houses to complete the project, but the request was turned down.
