Supply cut off to 500 companies selling bottled mineral water

Karachi: The Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) has decided to take immediate action of disconnection of water supply to over 500 companies in the city and surrounding areas which according to the water utility are involved in using the water supplied by the KWSB and later selling as mineral or bottled water. Chairing a high-profile meeting of the water board’s senior officials on Monday, the chief of KWSB Misbahuddin Farid said that such companies engaged in bottled water business should be blacklisted by the water utility and they should not be issued new water connections or neither the size of the older water connections should be increased.

The chief of the water board said the emergency response centres of the KWSB should be made operational on round-the-clock basis and for the purpose, the complaint centres’ staff should be posted in three shifts so that the water consumers of Karachi should not face any trouble in registration of their complaints regarding water supply and sewerage disposal services.

Farid also directed the deputy-managing-director Revenue of the water board to pay special attention on recovery of outstanding dues of the KWSB from its consumers in Karachi with the help of the Engineering Department.

He directed the water board’s officials concerned to bring on the tax net, unregistered multi-storey buildings, hotels, marriage lawns, and other commercial entities in the city so that charges should be duly recovered from such private establishments and businesses on account of water consumption.

He ordered the officials concerned that salary of the absentee staff of the water board should be duly deducted while promotions of staff-members should be made on merit.He directed the DMD Finance of the water board to upgrade and update the KWSB’s website. Whereas, he also directed the water board’s officials concerned to recover the water board’s land under illegal possession in various parts of the city.

KWSB’s bill date extended

The KWSB has extended till April 19 the last date for payment of the current month’s water bills by the water consumers in Karachi. Previously, the deadline for submission of water bills was April 12. The decision was taken on the directives of the MD of the KWSB in order to facilitate the water consumers in Karachi.
