LAHORE: Tax department employees held protest rallies all over the country on Tuesday, seeking representation in the management of the employees’ foundation. A Federal Revenue Alliance (FRA) spokesman said the protest rallies were held simultaneously in Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) offices across Pakistan under the banner of FBR Union. Regional offices are in the cities of Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Hyderabad, Multan, Bahawalpur and Sialkot.

Protesters chanted slogans against FBR member legal Aqil Usman, also the head of newly-formed FBR Foundation, for hindering workers’ representation in the management. A staggering 93.5 percent non-gazetted staff of the FBR is not represented in the management. Protestors said the union has already applied for changes in the basic rules.

They urged the authorities to fulfill the union’s charter of demands.

FBR Alliance Union Central President Mian Abdul Qayyum addressed the protesters at the regional tax office and requested the authorities to take steps to expedite liaison with the tax department workers.

Concerned about tax evasion by 1,200 foreign companies/Associations of Persons (AOPs), he asked the authorities to recover all outstanding dues, as a circular annulling the tax exemption extended to all AOPs has already been issued.
