Tax officers asked to remain vigilant

LAHORE: Additional Commissioner Regional Tax Office Lahore Captain Jahangir Ahmad has directed officers of the Inland Revenue to be vigilant in monitoring application of sales tax exemption so that no inconvenience is caused to citizens due to illegal imposition of sales tax.

In a statement he clarified that no sales tax is payable on essential items such as vegetables, fruits, meat, milk, grocery items including pulses, drugs, poultry, cereals and products of milling industry, poultry feed, dairy products, salt, bread, nan, chapatti, bun, rusk, stationery items, energy savers, lamps, sewing machines and bicycles.

These items shall remain sales tax exempt and increase in the rate of sales tax from 16 percent to 17 percent shall not affect any of the said items, he said. Additionally, Inland Revenue officers have been directed to take proper action against the violators.
