Tax ombudsman takes notice of tax dodgers

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO), while taking notice of a report on tax dodging by parliamentarians released by the Centre for Investigative Reporting in Pakistan, on Tuesday ordered the Federal Bureau of Revenue to submit its report in 10 days. The FTO mentioned that the report on tax dodging by parliamentarians was an analysis of the Income Tax Returns filed by members of parliament in 2011.

“The situation portrayed is appalling. A 9 percent tax to GDP ratio in Pakistan is one of the lowest in the world. The nation’s representatives in parliament are expected to be good

The FTO has taken suo moto cognizance of the matter under Section 9 of the FTO Ordinance 2000. The FBR is required to submit a detailed report in the matter within 10 days.’
