Traders oppose businesses seizure by Excise Dept

LAHORE The traders, while opposing the harsh measures of sealing business houses, have urged the provincial Excise and Taxation Department to give them time till June 30 to clear the outstanding amount instead of harassing them through different arm-twisting tactics.

They urged the Excise and Taxation Department to immediately withdraw notices and de-seal all the business houses in the larger interests of the economy.

They said that said that the issuance of notices to the businessmen at a time of installation of new government has raised many questions therefore, the Excise Department should stop this practice.

The private sector understands that the sealing of business houses should be the last option but unfortunately the people sitting at the helm at Provincial Excise and Taxation Department have little idea of the damage caused to a businessman as a result of such harsh measures.

Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry Farooq Iftikhar urged the provincial Excise and Taxation Department to act with caution and stop creating harassment among the businessmen over the issue of property tax dues. He said that the businesses were already under tremendous pressure because of multiple challenges, including acute shortage of electricity and gas.

They are in dire need of facilitation and hand-holding by the government to supplement efforts aimed at economic revival of the country.

“From where, the government would get the required revenues to run its day-to-day affairs when the private sector would not be allowed to do business.”
